Castles
North Wales is peppered with castles which tell the story of our turbulent history.
I have conducted tours, including for Cadw, around many of them including Conwy, Caernarfon, Beaumaris, Denbigh and Rhuddlan.
Let me bring their history to life for you. I can show you their cunning design features, the magnificence of their locations and the strategic part that they played in Edward I's 'ring of iron.'
Churches Chapels and Cathedrals
Wales has a long and deep religious history which is written large in our landscape and culture. There are countless atmospheric and inspirational places of worship to visit dating back to the Age of Saints.
I have guided many groups and individuals around them including for Cadw. From St. Giles' - 'The Glory of the Marches' in Wrexham to Valle Crucis near Llangollen, they are a joy to visit.
Coastline
I was lucky enough to be brought up on Anglesey. I spent my childhood fishing, crabbing, beachcombing and helping out on fishing and crabbing boats. The salt air is still in my nostrils.
I have guided students along a section of the Anglesey Coastal Path.
For my book on the river Dee I walked the course of the estuary and continue to do so regularly, soaking in the birdlife and the the incredible views.
Copper Coal and Iron
I was brought up in Amlwch, the seaport from which copper was shipped from the Parys mountain mines.
I spent a lifetime working in industry which has given me a deep passion for our industrial heritage.
On my tours of Wrexham I enjoy showing that heritage and talking about people such as John Wilkinson or 'iron mad Jack', and his pivotal role in the industrial revolution. At nearby Bersham he transformed the beautiful Clywedog Valley into the Silicone Valley of its day. Wrexham's industrial heritage is now told in a wonderful art trail - let me show you around it and bring the story to life.
Countryside
I live in a small village and am passionate about our countryside. I walked the length of the river Alun for my book 'Resurrection River' and similarly the River Dee for my book 'The Holy Dee'. I celebrate the sheer joy of walking and the wealth of wildlife which exists along their banks. On one walk I was lucky enough to guide an American family in the search for the houses of their ancestors and as they said 'to walk their land.'
History and Prehistory
As a youngster my playgrounds were the slopes of Parys Mountain and the copper bins at Amlwch Port. My interest in history therefore started young - I was a junior member of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society visiting many of Anglesey's prehistoric sites such as Din Lligwy. The interest has never left me. In later life, I gained a degree in Social and Cultural History from Glyndwr University in Wrexham. There is nothing I enjoy more than sharing the long and fascinating history of Wales - from the Bronze Age to the modern.
Industrial Heritage
I have spent a lifetime working in industry. I am now lucky enough to live in the Wrexham area, a hotbed of the industrial revolution. On my tours of the city I enjoy showing its rich industrial heritage which was built on coal, iron and steel. It was home to William Low who started the first channel tunnel and John Wilkinson who played a pivotal role in the industrial revolution. He is the grandfather of precision engineering and made the Clywedog Valley into the Silicone valley of its day. Join me on a tour which celebrates them.
Music, Culture and Poetry
I have an MA in Creative Writing and enjoy all aspects of writing. I have researched many writers and poets and their associations with north Wales such as John Sampson, George Borrow, Richard Wilson, Edward Pugh. I am a published author and continue to write and research projects. I am passionate about the Welsh language and its history and speak conversational Welsh. I incorporate all of these aspects into my tours.
Nature and Wildlife
I live in the beautiful small village of Hope which sits on the banks of the river Alun, a tributary of the river Dee. I walked the length of both of them when writing my books, experiencing at first hand, the joys of our countryside and the threats which it faces. I give talks on both books and do walks along the river Dee.
I am a member of the RSPB, NT, and North Wales Wildlife Trust and have been actively involved with many other countryside associations. I have a wide-ranging knowledge of our countryside and love to share that knowledge with others.
