TOUR DESCRIPTION

Mines, Mountains and Mansions

This circular tour of north and mid Ceredigion can incorporate a visit to a silver-lead mine, the products of a gold mine, and a mansion (the choice is yours, but there are extra entry fees) and the tour will take in the "rolling mountains" scenery of the Cambrian mountains (the back-bone of Ceredigion). The tour can be undertaken in a large coach or a small minibus.

The best place to start the tour is at Aberystwyth (however it can be started elsewhere as indicated). Aberystwyth was the port for the export of the minerals and products. To the north-east of Aberystwyth you can see the hills where many of the lead mines of North Ceredigion were located which were the most important lead mines in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The tour takes us inland to see the mansions of the wealthy, and a visit to a silver lead mine which is open to the public, where you can have a guided tour underground. During the entire journey you will be surrounded by the magnificant mountains of the Cambrian. We pass through a number of villages, which without the lead mines would not be as they are today. On our way we shall visit Devil's Bridge with the world famous waterfall, learn the fate of Mariamne of the Johnes family, pass the famous Cors Caron, where if you are lucky you may sight the beautiul red kite.

Turning our backs on the mountains we head back towards Cardigan Bay and you will be amazed at the views of the sea and the diverse landscapes as we head back towards Aberystwyth.
