I am very much looking forward to showing guests around this beautiful area and I currently offer walking tours locally to the historic market towns of Llangollen, Ruthin and Bala, as well as guided tours of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, and the castles and town walls of Edward I.
As a lover of history and of telling stories, it is my ambition to bring each site to life, taking you back in time to the hey-day of each location, and moving forward across the centuries to consider how time has altered our landscapes, culture and lives here in North Wales.
Castles
Wales has over 600 castles: from Iron Age hill forts, to castles built by native princes, to the mighty fortresses erected in North Wales by Edward I. Step back in time with a tour designed to suit your interests: perhaps a guided tour of Caernarfon or Conwy, and the medieval walls which form an almost intact ring around this beautiful market town, or a more strenuous walk to the heights of Dinas Bran overlooking Llangollen, or the iron age hillfort of Caer Drewyn, or, the more recently build Penrhyn Castle. Tours are full of interesting facts and stories, bringing this rich history to life.
Churches Chapels and Cathedrals
Religion forms an important part of all societies, and North Wales is home to some of the earliest places of worship, with sites dating to the Age of the Saints, all the way through to more modern churches, famed for their architecture and rich history. Along with visits to a range of sites of architectural and historical significance, tours will look at the fascinating evolution of religion in Wales and the ways in which people have and continue to worship.
Family History/Ancestral Tours
Many of us find tracing our origins back to their roots fascinating and, with careful planning and local knowledge, the places and stories of our ancestors can be brought to life. Tours which follow the footsteps of your relations can be arranged with prior information to allow for initial research and planning, bespoke tours can be offered which take you to see the sites and to experience the sounds your ancestors would have experienced and helping you to understand what makes you, you!
Folklore and Traditions
Welsh history is often underpinned with ancient stories an traditions which have been passed from generation to generation. From the heroic stories of the Mabinogion, to the mischievous antics of the Tylwyth Teg, many sites we visit here in North Wales are steeped in myths and legends, with the stories which surround each location bringing the place to life and allowing us to understand how people lived and the reasons for some of the choices they made. As we tour these sites, find yourself lost in a world of folklore and centuries-old culture.
Gardens and Stately Homes
As a keen gardener, the temperate climate of North Wales allows for some of the most beautiful gardens and habitats in the UK. From the world famous Bodnant Gardens, which houses national collections of plants collected from across the world, to the beautiful landscapes of Penrhyn Castle, and the award winning restoration project of the hidden gardens at Plas Cadnant, tours look at the flora, fauna and history behind these wonderful locations and promise to be both relaxing and highly informative.
History and Prehistory
Some of the oldest sites in the United Kingdom can be found in North Wales, with many of these located on Yns Mon (Anglesey), through the Clwydian Range and along the coastline of the Llyn Penisula. Tours which take you back in time, offering interpretation of ancient monuments, the ways in which people may have lived, and then bringing you forward through time, with stop-offs at important moments such as the Roman and Norman invasion of Wales, the Welsh princes and their conquests, to more recent industrial history of the slate quarrying and trade. History really is brought to life here!
