Snowdonia and the Slate IndustryTour ID: 147
A spectacular and dramatic scenic tour visiting Llanberis and the National Slate Museum of Wales at the foot of Snowdon. Here we will have a short easy walking tour of the quarry and learn how the quarrymen roofed the world and how this industry shaped the landscape and society of this significant region of Wales.
You will enjoy the scenic drive up the dramatic glaciated Llanberis Pass circling Wales’ highest mountain Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) and enjoy the spectacular views. We continue down the majestic Nant Gwynant Valley to the picturesque village of Beddgelert connected with Prince Llewellyn’s faithful hound, and surprisingly ‘Rupert the Bear’. The drive then takes us through sleepy villages and farmlands alongside the Welsh Highland Railway down to the Royal walled town of Caernarfon and it’s magnificent Castle. The story of slate ties up here at the slate quays where we see the remains of the supporting industries and foundries of the quarry and the docks for shipping the slate to all corners of the world.
