Biography

Croeso i Gonwy/Welcome to Conwy! My name is Nigel. I am a retired Geography and History Teacher and I moved to Llandudno in the county of Conwy in 2016 when, together with my wife, I opened a small Guest House. This area is full of historical interest and I have spent much of my time learning about the history and geography of Conwy since I moved here.

During the Covid lock downs  I studied to become a Tourism Ambassador for Conwy and achieved a Gold Standard. This enabled me to do the course to become an official White Badge Guide to Conwy Castle and the walled Town of Conwy.

I love living in the Conwy area and in many ways feel if I have returned to my roots as 2 of my grandparents came from Caernarfon.

I am very enthusiastic about the people and history of Conwy and I look forward to guiding you around Conway and it’s Castle.

Interests

Churches Chapels and Cathedrals

Did you know that there are over 600 castles in Wales, so if you are interested in Castles you have come to the right place. Conwy Castle is one of the best preserved and has a fascinating history, which I look to sharing with you.

Churches Chapels and Cathedrals

St Mary's Church in the centre of Conwy is the oldest building in Conwy Town. Originally there was a Cistercian Monastery on the site before Edward I built the castle and town and some of the stones from the monastery form part of the Church Tower.

Coastline

The history of Conwy has been hugely influenced by the coastline. The port has over time imported goods from far and wide whilst exporting slate all round the world. As a keen angler I am an avid visitor to the coast throughout the year.

Food and Drink

Conwy and North Wales are great areas for local produce. Conway muscles are world renowned for their quality and a large range of fish species can be found in Welsh waters. Local cheeses and meats are available in Conwy and nearby is a vineyard producing over 18,000 bottles per year.

Geography and Geology

As an ex Geography teacher I am extremely interested in the landscape of the area and how it has influenced the development and history of the region.

History and Prehistory

I have been fascinated by History since childhood and the pages of history are right on our doorstep here in Conwy with all eras evidenced from prehistoric burial mounds and iron age forts, through Medieval castle building and the industrial revolution right through to World War 2 and beyond.
